Getting out to a meeting takes effort, especially when we have so many other activities to absorb our time and energy. Nevertheless, the teaching power of listening to other addicts share of their lives is so valuable. If I listen, I can find a little bit of myself in everyone who speaks in the meeting. Learning past the point needed to stay clean gives me a reserve of recovery I can draw upon in the toughest of times ("pull recovery"). Thinking I've learned all I need to in order to stay clean can signal the complacency that could send me back to relapse. Ironically, while I am learning about recovery I am simultaneously forgetting about the pain that my addiction caused. Meetings will keep me learning about recovery so my lessons about the pain of addiction and alcoholism never fade away.
